Joe Hasan began his martial arts training around four years old. His initial training was studying the Indonesian Art of Penjak Silat under his father, the late Jusuf Hasan. In 1986, Master Hasan began his Taekwondo training under Master Michael D Friello.
Competitively, Joe was very active and successful from 1987 through 2004, competing in numerous local, state, national, and international competitions. In 1992, Joe took his first referee certification course in order to become more knowledgeable in the rules he was competing under. Between 1998 and 2004, Joe split his time between competing and officiating; however, since 2004 Joe has shifted his focus to officiating and directing tournaments as a way to give back to the future of Taekwondo.
Outside of the martial arts world, Joe earned a BS from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in management with a concentration in information systems (2002). Prior to pursuing a full time career in Taekwondo, Joe worked as a business analyst, technical analyst, and as a product manager both in the private software industry as well as in the state government.
